What I Do

I build tools that make reproducible research easier for data scientists and researchers. With a Ph.D. in biostatistics and deep expertise in the Quarto and R ecosystems, I bridge the gap between statistical rigour and practical usability. My work spans multi-omics data analysis (e.g., genetics, proteomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics, etc.) mostly in a research setting, R package development, and Quarto ecosystem contributions.

Creator of the Quarto Extensions Directory, Quarto Wizard Visual Studio Code extension, and Awesome Quarto repository, with 30+ Quarto extensions developed.

My Quarto and Typst work covers Lua filters and shortcodes, HTML, Reveal.js, and Typst formats, plus Gribouille, a grammar of graphics for Typst. On the R side I have written packages for genomics quality control, statistical testing, and visualisation (NACHO, insane, MiSTr, snpEnrichment), and some that are far less useful but much more entertaining (ggpacman).

My research covers genome-wide and epigenome-wide association studies, expression quantitative trait loci mapping, and the joint modelling of longitudinal and time-to-event data, applied mostly to type 2 diabetes and its complications. Eight of those papers place me as first, co-first, last, or co-last author.

I teach R and Quarto, with pre-configured Dev Container templates so that participants spend the session working rather than installing. Away from the keyboard I watch a lot of films (Films seen count), about half of them in a theatre, play board games from heavy strategy to party games, and walk Saga, my black labrador.

Work with Me

What do you take on as a freelance?

Tooling and publishing work only: Quarto extensions and multi-format pipelines (HTML, Typst/PDF, Reveal.js), R package development, shiny applications, reproducible workflows with Dev Containers and continuous integration, and training. In practice that ranges from a single Lua filter to a full reporting pipeline with brand theming. Biostatistics, clinical, and data-analysis work is not part of my freelance offer.

Why the distinction between freelance and employed work?

I wear two hats. As a freelance I take on Quarto, Typst, and R engineering work in my own name. Biostatistics goes through my employer, Alsinova, where I am a senior biostatistician: genome-wide and epigenome-wide association studies, longitudinal and mixed models, joint longitudinal-survival modelling, and meta-analysis, with the reporting that goes with them. If that is what you need, write to me anyway and I will point you to the right contact there.

How does a freelance engagement usually start?

With an email describing what you are trying to publish or automate, and what currently gets in the way. I answer with a scope, a rough estimate, and the questions I need answered before quoting properly. Short engagements of a few days work as well as multi-month ones.

Do you work remotely?

Yes, exclusively, and I have done so since 2022. I am based in Lille, France, and used to working asynchronously with teams across time zones, on GitHub or GitLab.

Do you provide training?

Yes, on Quarto, Typst, R, and reproducible workflows with Dev Containers. Existing material includes a two-day Mastering Quarto CLI workshop, alongside R and Shiny courses, all adaptable to your team’s level.
