Mickaël CANOUIL

Biostatistician, Quarto wizard, and cinephile.

I am a consultant in Biostatistics and a freelance developer specialising in the Quarto and R ecosystems.
I combine expertise in genetics and multi-omics analysis with open-source development, bridging academic/private research with practical tool creation.

I am available for both short-term and extended engagements on Quarto related projects.

I also enjoy watching movies (Movies seen count) and playing with .

What I Do

I translate complex biostatistical challenges into elegant, user-friendly solutions. My work spans multi-omics data analysis (e.g., genetics, proteomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics, etc.) mostly in a research setting, R package development, and Quarto ecosystem contributions.

Research & Publications

49 peer-reviewed papers in top-tier journals.

I have published 49 peer-reviewed papers in top-tier journals including Nature and Nature Genetics, with my most recent co-last author publication in Nature Communications (2024) presenting a framework for GWAS using repeated measures data.

Open Source Contributions

Creator of the Quarto Extensions Directory, Quarto Wizard Visual Studio Code extension, and Awesome Quarto repository, with 15+ Quarto extensions developed.

I have developed a few  packages (e.g.insane, NACHO), and although some are not very useful, they are most definitely entertaining (i.e.ggpacman).

I created the Quarto Extensions Directory, the Quarto Wizard Visual Studio Code extension, and have developed 15+ Quarto extensions. My Awesome Quarto repository serves as a comprehensive resource for the Quarto community.

Teaching & Workshops

I have developed workshop materials covering fundamentals, and Quarto, with pre-configured Dev Container templates for reproducible teaching environments.

Technical Skills

Whilst grounded in genetics and multi-omics, my skills extend across modern data science and software development. I work with Docker multi-stage builds, Dev Containers, CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions or Google Cloud Platform services, production Shiny dashboards, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, and Visual Studio Code extensions. I support polyglot data science projects with deep expertise complemented by Python integration. My publishing systems mastery covers the full Quarto multi-format pipeline (e.g., HTML, PDF via Typst, Reveal.js), website creation, and book authoring.
